The 3D Printing Technology

Short for Fused Deposition Modelling, FDM 3D printing is arguably the most common method of 3D printing. Being one of the most developed 3D printing method, it is cost-efficient as well. Filament is fed directly into the nozzle of the 3D printer, which is maintained at a temperature suitable for the type of material being used. The melted filament is then extruded out of the nozzle and onto the print bed according to the design along the horizontal plane. Extruded filament is then cooled and solidified and the process is repeated over several layers till the design is finished.

It is possible to control the layer height, or resolution, according to your needs. FDM 3D prints will have layer lines and support marks, should support materials be required for overhanging parts. Support materials require tools to be removed, or can be dissolved using a solvent if a soluble material is used for the supports. FDM 3D printing is good for many different types of prints and can also produce end use parts as well.

DLP, or Digital Light Processing, is a type of stereolithography. DLP 3D printing consists of a shallow vat of photoreactive liquid resin and a digital light projector. The projector projects the cross section of the 3D model layer by layer onto the resin below, which cures the resin and causes that layer to harden. This process repeats layer by layer until the entire model is done. Thus, comparatively, DLP is a faster method of 3D printing than FDM, as the entire layer can be printed at the same time.

This method of 3D printing has a higher X-Y resolution, but is slightly more costly due to the material. It is good for small and intricate parts and for transparent models, as the resin allows the 3D print to be completely transparent.
